Dieter Rams and Good Design

Good design is making something intelligible and memorable. Great design is making something memorable and meaningful. -Dieter Rams

Last Sunday I found myself at the SFMoma, finally wandering the gallery of the Less and More exhibit, featuring the work and story of Dieter Rams. I was so moved.  This Sunday I found myself cozy, on my couch, watching Objectified…and there was Mr. Rams again, discussing his 10 principles of good design! And here they are, shot from my iPhone at the museum-the first two pictures are a little blurry, but just click the link above for a closer look at the Rams wisdom!

{Nopalito}

A quick dinner between the DMV, the computer lab at school and then a little more legal work before the night is through brought me to one of my favorite spots today: Nopalito.

Nopalito was designed by Berkeley based Abueg Morris Architects and in 2009 was named San Francisco’s best new restaurant by both SF Weekly and Esquire Magazine. The Caldo Tlalpeno hasn’t lost its touch!

Design Spotlight: SF Public Works

I came across this space recently in a California Home and Design article, and was impressed, not just with the attractive industrial space and smart design innovation, but with the space’s purpose as well. “Public Works provides artists no-cost studio space and residencies as well as a gallery for rotating art shows and a portion of the earnings go to non-profit organizations in the area.” It also houses the SF Underground Market  (read about this!) and some other really cool events.

A sense of responsible community cohesiveness and well being, possible because a space was created for it to thrive. This is why I love this stuff.

Happy Friday (the 13th!) my dear friends. Have a great weekend. xo, coco

San Francisco’s Decorator Showcase is here!

Running throughout the month of May, this is one event you should try and make if you’re at all interested in beautiful homes, amazing city views, work from leading designers and/or helping kids. Soo… see you there?!

Since 1977, the annual San Francisco Decorator Showcase has benefited San Francisco University High School’s financial aid program, raising over $11 million in its 33 years. The San Francisco Decorator Showcase is widely considered to be the West Coast’s premiere design showhouse event, renowned for featuring the work of the region’s top interior and landscape designers. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, the participation of hundreds of accomplished designers, the school’s trustees, parents, faculty, alumni, students, friends, and the thousands of Showcase visitors each year; the San Francisco Decorator Showcase allows San Francisco University High School to offer financial aid to its students. It is through the community’s continued support that quality education has been made available over the past three decades to hundreds of deserving Bay Area students.The 2010 Decorator Showcase raised over $590,000.

(More information, as well as show dates and times can be found at the official website.)

Judging from the more than two dozen spaces in this year’s showcase, walls, ceilings and floors are apparently having a moment. In its 34th year, an appropriate subtitle might be: ‘The importance of surfaces.’” -SF Gate

I personally cannot wait to get a look inside! Happy weekend friends, coco
